Food Divine Basque Spanish Food

Forget everything I ever said about Spanish food

ham tomato sauteed apple and walnut with honey glaze  and red pepper zucchini cheese and dill pinxtos

being tasteless
Ham and potato and jalapeno pepper pinxtos
 and boring
 and bland and without variety

orange and pastry and almond

Basque pie with chocolate and custard

Homemade cheese and breads

More baked goods ;)

Bread oven old school

blueberry tart

grilled fish and sausages and ribs

Creperie

Yummy pintxo (what's left of it ;) after I devoured most of it. Tomato, red pepper, zucchini  lightly tempura-dipped

More pintxos....the Spanish olives skewers were insane...anchovies, banana peppers and green olives marinated in oil

Potato crisps straight from the fryer ;)

Oh yeah that is good....kids hoarding their custard-filled chocolate dipped churro

Anise, tomatoes and herbs, ginger and wheat make for a beautiful display

The Spaniards love of food is apparent in their constant purchasing of baquettes and pan de sal, with  cheeses and hams served with strong coffee. The omnipresent corner candy store on each and every corner of every street (how can they not be morbidly obese?) and the mass of crowds of children swarming around the self-serve aisle of the local video rental shop. (Really? Pickled eggs and onions next to the chocolate covered raisins and sweet and sour candies?

The amazing thing is I have not gained any weight, if anything have lost a half-stone with the walking. It is no big deal here to take your wheeled nylon grocery bag (it looks a lot like a piece of carry-on luggage) and pull that bag for two to three city blocks. Give me the salty and full-flavored and okay, fatty food of the Northern Spanish Basque region instead of the non-fat, low sodium, diet 'foods' of the United States. This is a better way to live.

Now it's 3:45 pm.  After going to our first semi-professional basketball game watching our local men Caja Laboral Baskonia  play we had a delicious lunch of baguette, kiwi, ham and cheese with some bottled water . We have plans to meet some of Beloved's coworkers at a restaurant tonight at 8:30 for dinner.

Time for a siesta ;)
